Finding traces of the county around Wietmarschen

In 1152, Knight Hugo von Büren founded the Benedictine monastery Sunte Marienrode, laying the foundation stone for today's Wietmarschen. The Benedictine monastery later became a women's monastery until it was converted into a ladies' convent. The monastery and convent were gradually demolished after the Second World War. Today, only the collegiate church remains. In 1921, Bishop Wilhelm Berning of Münster elevated the former Benedictine monastery to an official place of pilgrimage. To this day, the pilgrimage church is visited by thousands of believers every year to pray before the statue of Our Lady of Wietmarschen. Traditionally on the Sunday before Ascension Day. A small museum located in the former administrative building of the monastery tells the story of Wietmarschen's monastery and convent history. Visitors can also enjoy a café in the former servants' quarters
