"Animal" fun - at the family zoo in the countryside
In order to bring visitors as close as possible to the animals, many enclosures in Nordhorn are designed to be accessible. Of course, this is not possible for all animal species, but has now been implemented in the owl tundra, the vulture rock, the coastal aviary, the Bennett's kangaroos, the alpacas and maras, the sika deer, two petting zoos, the feathered Australians and, most recently, the spacious enclosure for the German giants. The meerkat enclosure and the show feeding kitchen also give you an exciting insight into the animal kingdom!
Informational feedings bring visitors closer to seals, squirrel monkeys, griffon vultures and porcupines, among others. The zoo's largest animal is the North American wood bison, which is the heraldic animal. The herd can be seen in the entrance area together with the peccaries in a large enclosure.
Another special feature of the zoo is the "Vechteaue Nature Trail". Here, children and young people are introduced to the secrets of animals and nature with educational games and information boards. If you follow the adventure trail on stilts through the beautiful alluvial forest biotope on the old arm of the Vechte, you will reach the historic Vechtehof, which is part of the beautiful Vechtewelt. The original farm, which is over 100 years old and has a real farm garden, is home to many different old and sometimes highly endangered breeds of domestic animals. An absolute visitor magnet is the petting zoo with piglets from the Bentheim pig breed.
The Vechtehof is adjacent to the cozy inn "De MalleJan". Visitors are spoiled with homemade cakes and pies in the historic restaurant. Delicacies and gift baskets with regional products can be purchased in the village butcher's shop.
Another restaurant of the Nordhorn zoo is located in the center of the zoo. The cafeteria's large sun terrace is directly adjacent to the adventure playground and the petting zoo. Directly next to the cafeteria is the "Max Abenteuerland", a covered indoor playground that offers many children first-class play opportunities even in unstable weather or cooler temperatures.
