On the road on the Osning-Route car holiday route
You can drive along the Osning-Route holiday route with its surprising viewpoints in the south of the Osnabrücker Land region. This tour touches 14 places, you can marvel at over 10 castles or manor houses and you can stop off for a hike or a walk in the Teutoburg Forest and Wiehengebirge mountains.
Start your tour in Osnabrück: the town hall of the Peace of Westphalia, the gabled houses on the market square, St. Peter's Cathedral and the restored half-timbered façades make an impressive impression on onlookers. The baroque castle is now the seat of the university and the most important Renaissance town house, the Ledenhof, is home to the German Foundation for Peace Research, among others.
Away from the main roads, the route leads through Bissendorf to the picturesque village of Holte. In the direction of Georgsmarienhütte, you then have a truly rewarding scenic section ahead of you, as the name "Borgloher Schweiz" (Borgloher Switzerland) suggests.
Take a panoramic view from one of the observation towers! You remain in the "green zone" as you continue your journey via Hasbergen to Hagen.
The wooded nature park characterizes the region and in spring, the cherry blossom transforms parts of Hagen into a sea of white flowers. You soon reach Bad Iburg. Iburg Castle, visible from afar, is the only surviving hilltop castle in the Osnabrück region. At the southernmost tip of the Osnabrücker Land, you head for Glandorf, where you can enjoy delicious locally grown asparagus dishes during the asparagus season.
The two spa towns of Bad Laer and Bad Rothenfelde rely on their healing brine deposits. Bad Laer also offers the Blomberg with its botanical rarities. In contrast, Bad Rothenfelde's graduation towers dominate the town, with the inhalation corridor inside and the well-tended parks in front of them completing the picture. If you drive through Dissen, it's good to know that margarine was invented here. Once you have almost left the Teutoburg Forest behind you, you enter the "urban area" of Melle. In terms of area, Melle is almost the largest town in Lower Saxony. There are a number of moated castles and mills to visit, and the bifurcation (river division) near Gesmold is unique.
On the way to Bad Essen, you can marvel at original-sized dinosaurs and fossilized dinosaur tracks on a cliff face in the Wiehengebirge, while the town center impresses with its historic half-timbered ensemble. Then drive past Gut Arenshorst near Bohmte and through the hilly Ostercappeln. The most beautiful moated castle in the Osnabrück region is located in Schledehausen. Before the themed route soon comes to an end in Osnabrück, you have a pleasant ride ahead of you through the nature park and the municipality of Belm, where, according to legend, Widukind was baptized.
