The Johannissteine are 300 million year old sandstones
.

The Johannissteine are a naturally grown group of rocks made of conglomeratic sandstone. They have inspired the imagination of many people. Footprints of John the Baptist can be seen in them. Small holes were interpreted as an ancient Germanic observatory, even as the centre of the world. The solution: In 1926, someone chiselled footprints into it as well as eight holes showing the figure of the constellation "Big Dipper" - as an advertisement for a book of fairy tales.
