Monasteries

Once you are in Holzhausen, your gaze is drawn directly to the dome of Ohrbeck Monastery Church.

Even though this building looks back on a comparatively recent history, it bears witness to the history of the Osnabrück region just as much as the medieval monasteries do.

Since 1971, the monastery has been home to the adult education centre "Haus Ohrbeck", which has been a recognized residential school of the state of Lower Saxony since 1974. Throughout the year, seminars are offered to promote the exploration of cultural and social topics. The house can also be booked for external events, seminars and lectures.

History:

  • In 1889-95, Bishop Bernard Höting (1882-89) tried in vain to re-found a Franciscan monastery in Osnabrück. This was preceded by the so-called Kulturkampf, the conflict between the Prussian state and the Catholic Church.
  • In 1917, the Prussian government approved the construction of the monastery on 4 hectares of woodland on the slopes of the Boberges (bordering Holzhausen).
  • The first fathers of the Saxon Franciscan Province (Saxonia) came to Ohrbeck in 1918. The church was consecrated by Bishop Berning on 22.9.1929.
  • During National Socialism, it was confiscated, after which the Franciscans returned. In 1972, the monastery grounds were transferred to the town of GMH.
  • Considered the center of the retreat movement in the diocese of Osnabrück. Since 1971, a Catholic educational institution has been established in part of the monastery "Haus Ohrbeck" and has been a residential adult education center of the state of Lower Saxony since 1974.
  • Today, the monastery belongs to the German Franciscan Province (Germania).
