The castle was built by Osnabrück Bishop Engelbert II at the beginning of the 14th century;
The keep was built entirely according to defence tactics. The ground floor and first floor were separate storeys with no connection to the storeys above and could only be reached from the outside via ladders. Only from the 2nd floor upwards were the floors connected by stairs or ladders. The window openings are all embrasure-shaped. The moats that surround the entire complex can still be recognised today.
In the 15th century, the first stone residential building and a stone wall around the complex were probably built next to the tower. In the 18th century, when the castle had finally lost its function as a fortress, the complex was converted into an administrative centre for the Osnabrück prince-bishopric.
Today, Wittlage Castle is run by the Wittlager Children's House. Home-made cakes in the in-house café, which is run as an inclusive business, are the best way to experience the landmark of the Wittlager Land. The café and the other rooms offer the ideal setting for cultural events or as an unusual party location.
