Journey into the past: The Old Watermill in Bad Essen

The mill rattles by the rushing brook. Clunk, clunk. You are inevitably reminded of the old children's song when you stand in front of the Old Watermill in Bad Essen. At weekends in summer, the wooden water wheel turns just like in the old days. Today, hard-working volunteer millers look after the historic building on the outskirts of Bad Essen and take you on a journey back in time.

From co rn to flour

It was once the courtyard mill of the adjacent Maierhof farm. Today, as then, grain is ground in the mill again. Every Sunday from 2 to 5 pm (May to October), three millers take you on a tour and explain everything you need to know about the grinding processes and machines in their charming way. Today, grain is once again ground into flour in the old watermill in Bad Essen. The freshly produced wholemeal flour is also for sale. If you'd like to try your hand at it yourself, you can use the hand millstone to see how hard it is to grind the grain with muscle power.
