The gardeners at the Belmer Integrationswerkstatt* have created a perennial garden covering around 350 square meters.
The extensive planting: foxglove, hemerocallis (daylilies), coneflowers in various species and varieties, catmint, lavender, bellflowers, wall pepper and other wall perennials, spurge in various species, phlox, hypericum (various), hollyhocks, poppies, daisies, cranesbill in species and varieties. The arrangement of perennials is completed by countless flower bulbs of various genera, species and varieties.
Butterfly bushes of different varieties, roses, five-fingered shrubs and spireas have been used as leading shrubs. The trees include various types of fruit (apple, pear, cherry) as well as trumpet trees, ash trees and redthorn. Towards Lindenstraße, the Integrationswerkstatt site is bordered by a yew hedge.
Roses, clematis, ivy and lonicera of different varieties and species are used as climbing plants.
A special feature of the BIW garden is the integration of the open courtyard and roof drainage of the entire site. The surface water is collected and fed into a pond in which water lilies, marsh calla lilies and irises bloom. The retaining wall of the pond is made of sandstone, in which numerous wall perennials bloom throughout the year.
All in all, the garden was planned with more than just species-rich diversity in mind. The planting is designed in such a way that there is something in bloom almost all year round. Some flower bulbs even bloom well into late autumn.
Most of the perennials and shrubs are propagated by the BIW gardener through cuttings or seedlings.
The BIW's farm garden "around the corner" at the Christuskirche is also worth a visit.
