Churches Historic buildings Place to see Cultural centre

In 1492-1523 the St. Martinus church was rebuilt in the late Gothic style

The mighty sandstone tower of this church is not only the oldest building, but also the landmark of Hagen.

The former church is a cultural center with changing exhibitions and regular concerts. The excellent acoustics in the interior make it the ideal venue for concerts

The high altar with the depiction of St. Martin on horseback and the depiction of the Divine Trinity could be preserved thanks to generous donations . The current art glazing was designed and produced by master glazier Karl Jakubietz from Hagen. It shows the parish patron St. Martinus in the church tower and the holy sacraments in the side aisles.

In order to preserve the listed church, a supporting association was founded in 1978, which to this day takes care of necessary renovations and restorations as well as cultural events.

History:

  •  The first Martinus church was probably built in Hagen around 860. The "parrochia" (parish) of Hagen was first mentioned in 1097 and the St. Martinus patrocinium in 1341.
  • The present church was rebuilt in 1492-1523 in place of a presumably Romanesque predecessor church. The church tower is the oldest building in the town and is considered Hagen's landmark.
  • It was deconsecrated when a new parish church was built in the 1970s, but the tower continues to serve as a bell tower and has been used for cultural purposes as the "Former Church" since 1976.

Stories / Legends:

  • St. Martin was the national saint alongside St. Remigius. Remigius was the national saint of the Franks (many St. Martin's churches in the OL, especially where there was once a Frankish royal estate.
  • The first church in Hagen is said to have stood in the Altenhagen district. However, as a crime was committed in it, the church was moved to the Beckerode farming community. The (church) village of Hagen developed around the church there. The oldest relic of this building is a simple Romanesque baptismal font (around 1200).
