Accessible nature experience trail in the raised bog Finsterauer Filz

The Finsterauer Filz Experience Trail provides insights into the renaturated raised bog. You can easily move on the trail with strollers, wheelchairs, as it consists of paved paths and partly a wooden boardwalk. Along the way, there are information boards about the flora and fauna in this unique habitat.

ATTENTION for those arriving by car:
The Wistlberg parking area is currently closed. We recommend using the Igelbus (Finsterau-Bus, Line 603, public transport) for your arrival or utilizing the parking facilities at the Ski- und Sportzentrum (Ski and Sports Stadium) Finsterau. From there, follow the National Park cycling path towards Bučina (note: there are steep inclines!).

Tour description:
We begin our tour at the Igelbus stop Finsterauer Filz on Buchwaldstraße. From there, we head directly into the forest on a well-maintained forest path. Just a few meters ahead, we follow the ‘Birkhuhn’ (Black grouse) trail marker slightly to the right. The path narrows and winds its way through the forest on the edge of the raised bog. Shortly thereafter, a wooden boardwalk begins, and we follow it to the right. The forest thins out, and we eventually reach the raised bog Finsterauer Filz. This bog was renaturized some time ago to restore this unique habitat. Here, we can learn about several rare and specialized animal and plant species that depend on this habitat from the information boards along the way. Several seating areas invite us to take a rest and observe nature.

At the end of the wooden boardwalk, we turn back and return to the Igelbus stop Finsterauer Filz, which is the starting point of our tour, following the same path. You can also continue straight, but those paths are not accessible for wheelchair and strollers.
Correct on the go – all the time:

  • Beware of falling trees and deadwood! The use of the path is at your own risk. At strong wind please leave the forest for safety reasons!
  • Path regulations in order to protect endangered plants and animals in certain areas of the national park
  • Please do not leave any trash! Dog poop bags or handkerchiefs do not belong in nature either. Please help to keep our wild forest clean. Thank you!
Always ensure to have good equipment: card, sturdy shoes, something to drink, first aid kit, bad weather clothing
