Schutzhaus

The Waldschmidthaus can be found just below the summit of Großer Rachel.

The shelter at Großer Rachel owes its name to Maximilian Schmidt, also called Waldschmidt. The novelist from Eschlkam (1832-1919) dealt with the Bavarian-Bohemian neighborhood for example and used real settings for his narratives. Built in 1912 by the Spiegelau section of the Waldverein, the Waldschmidthaus was privately owned in 1920. Today, it is in possession of the Free State of Bavaria and serves as a refreshment point for hikers during the summer months.
