The Große Kanzel is located in front of the highest mountains of the Bavarian Forest National Park.

The foothills of the border mountain range in the vicinity of Schönbrunn am Lusen are particularly characterized of impressive rock formations and native forest areas. The region is called Steinberg because of the enormous boulders that are scattered all over the ridge. The most important and outstanding rocks are called Große Kanzel and Kleine Kanzel. The apron of the national park spreads at the foot of Großer Kanzel with an altitude of the 1002 meters above sea level. From here, the Alpine peaks can be seen in good weather.
