Look for the tracks of the mystic and theosophist Jacob Böhme - the most famous son of Görlitz.

Jacob Böhme passed 30 years of his life in Görlitz including his professional starts as a shoemaker, his long phase of creative work and his burial. Those who visit Görlitz and its history will discover many traces of Jacob Böhme: places of living, places of inspiration and places of conflicts with the ecclesiastical order, which considered his enthusiastic faith as a provocation. Persons who appreciate Boehme's work will enjoy feeling the history and soul of the great mystic in many places in the city at the Neisse River.

During the tour you will visit places of living as well as places of his intellectual world and places of memory such as his grave at St. Nicholas' Cemetery or the memorial in "Park des Friedens". In the Polish part of the City, Zgorzelec, you can also find traces of Jacob Böhme, for example his dwelling with an exhibition.

The tour starts in "Park des Friedens" where the memorial of Jacob Böhme is located. From here walk past the Hochschule to the city bridge to Zgorzelec. Follow the shore of the Neisse River to the Jacob-Böhme-Haus. Here you will find a small exhibition on his life.

Now walk back to Görlitz to St. Peter's Church via Old Town Bridge (Altstadtbrücke). In May 1599 Jacob Böhme married in St. Peter's Church. Continue walking through the alley "Hainwald"to Neißstraße and turn right. You will reach the Baroque House (Barockhaus) with the Upperlusatian Library of Sciences (Oberlausitzische Bibliothek der Wissenschaften). The library together with the International Jacob-Böhme-Association is considered to be a unique centre of research.

Walk to Untermarkt, where you will find different places which can be connected to Jacob Böhme and his work, such as the Renaissance stairs of the town hall. Several time Jacob Böhme had to take these stairs to enter the town hall for some hearings. At the cobbler bench Böhme sold shoes manufactured by his own hands for thirteen years. In 1613 he sold the building and earned money with commercial transactions.

From Untermarkt walk via Jüdenstraße in the direction of the Nikolaiturm, past the Jesus-Bäcker to the St. Nicholas' Cemetery and St. Nicholas' Church. The grave of Jacob Böhme is located here. From the entrance walk up the small hill. The grave is on the right-hand side behind St. Nicholas' Church.
