Church

The Protestant parish of Bad Berleburg includes the town of Bad Berleburg and the local parishes of Schüllar and Wemlighausen.

Behind today's parish lies a long history of events which were unique in this form, and which have had a lasting influence on the people and community life.

The first Protestant Reformed church was consecrated in 1576 on the Marktplatz, today's Goetheplatz, after Countess Margarethe von Henneberg had brought the new religious ideas to Berleburg in 1534 after her marriage to Count Johann VII zu Sayn-Wittgenstein.In 1825 the church survived the great town fire almost unscathed, but due to structural neglect it had to be closed in 1839.

The present four-bay gallery basilica made of local greywacke and red sandstone was rebuilt on the site where it stands today and consecrated in 1859. Special features are the "Loge des Patrons", from which the princely family watched the service, the large bell from 1741, which is accompanied by two smaller bells from 1954, and the bullet holes in the clock face on the south side of the 41-metre-high tower, which date from the Second World War. The organ dates from 1974 and was installed during a major renovation. At the same time, the Berleburg artist Wolfgang Kreutter designed the headmaster pieces.
