Treat yourself to very special nature adventure with the whole family at the Wissent-Wildnis (bison wilderness). An “encounter” with these majestic animals is an unforgettable experience.
The “Wisent-Wildnis am Rothaarsteig” (Bison Wilderness on the Rothaarsteig) provides an insight into what is a unique species conservation project in Europe, because since April 2013, there are free-roaming bison in the Rothaar Mountains again - in their own enormous territory.
However, they are very rarely seen there and then only by chance. Because of this, the “Wisent-Wildnis” was created as a “peep-hole” into the species conservation project. On a 20 hectare site, most of which is still in its natural state, there lives a second herd of bison - an extraordinary experience of animals and a special opportunity for the whole family to enjoy nature. With cliff formations, a stream, valley heads, a forest and a valley, the “Wisent-Wildnis” is a pleasure to hike, a family excursion and a chance to observe animals all in one. A stream crossing and an enormous roof construction whisk visitors away to the natural world.
A three kilometre long loop trail runs through the home of the bison and allows visitors to marvel at the mighty creatures up close. The walk takes two to three hours along the hiking trail close to nature. Suitable, sturdy shoes and sure-footedness are required.
The approximately three kilometre walk is not suitable for visitors with restricted mobility or guests with pushchairs, among others. As an alternative, there is a mostly level and firm agricultural road (around 600 metres long) that can be accessed at a reduced entry price. However, there are only restricted views of the facility from here.
