Literature in nature - romantic Hickengrund

The tour begins at the “Grosser Stein” car park in Holzhausen. Walk uphill along the path that leads to the Rothaarsteig trail. Directly near the “Grosser Stein” rock, you arrive at one of the seven listening stations. A few steps later, you reach the Rothaarsteig (RHS) hiking trail. You now follow the trail to turn left towards Lützeln. Suddenly, a wonderful view opens out onto Lützeln, nestling below in the valley. You later pass the old crushing plant, a relic from the time when the quarry was still in use. Continuing along the overall route, turn right together with the RHS and you’ll come to the next highlight, the view on the kaolin clay pit. After several kilometres of varying landscape, follow the path to the left to the forest. At the “Drei-Länder-Eck”, the corner where three countries meet, you cross a federal state boundary. Wide forest paths then take you northwards on the northern flank

of the Hickengrund region. Continue at the same level and head for the next viewing point, “Einsamer Baum” (“lonely tree”). You then follow soft meadow paths downhill; in some places, the descent is steep. Shortly before Niederdresselndorf, cross the stream over a bridge. After the village, go uphill to the edge of the forest through open meadows. You reach the starting point at the hikers’ car park on an almost flat path.

• Some stretches run along steep paths that may become slippery in wet weather. Sure-footedness is required if this happens. Hiking sticks are helpful along this section.

Hiking trails are usually far from communities and settlements and every hiker has worried at some time about what would happen if there was an emergency. How can I be found here? Where am I? Can I contact the rescue service?

In serious cases, however, this has to happen quickly! Because of this, so-called rescue signs have been installed all along the Rotharrsteig. The green and white plaques that have been attached to the signposts show the number you have to give when making your emergency call. This tells the rescuers exactly where you are, allowing valuable time to be saved.

Equipment, food and drink for a day’s hike and solid shoes recommended.

The seven listening stations make the trail a unique romantic experience.

The old schools in Niederdresselndorf or Holzhausen are worth a visit.

A45 to Haiger-Burbach, L730 to Holzhausen then via Hickengrundstraße and “Zum Großen Stein” to the natural pond/Großer Stein car park

Full circuit: Holzhausen hiking car park at the natural pond/Großer Stein car park

North loop: Sportplatz Lützeln (Hainhof-Str.)

South loop: Hickengrundhalle in Niederdresselndorf 

You can get here in comfort by train. Exit at Holzhausen or Niederdresselndorf. From there, you can reach the hiking tour via the marked Rothaarsteg access route in the direction of Burbach. The loop tour can also be reached by bus. Exit at the Hoorwaldstraße stop in Burbach-Holzhausen.
