The neanderland STEIG Discovery Loop combines nature and history in and around Velbert-Nierenhof and Velbert-Bonsfeld. An important intersection between Essen, Hattingen and the former town of Langenberg and Wuppertal, many roads branch off here. The route takes you past the Schützenhof restaurant, which has been serving guests since the end of the 19th century.
The Discovery Loop “Gustav-Heinemann Route” leads from the 4th leg of the neanderland STEIG to Velbert-Langenberg. It takes you through the Bergisch and Elfringhausen “Alps” where the landscape on the border between the Rhineland and Westphalia is reminiscent of the unspoilt or agriculturally used meadows, deep valleys and fantastic panoramic views found in Switzerland. The northern section of the route takes you gently through the Felderbachtal conservation area. The third Federal President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Gustav Walter Heinemann, used to take walks through the Felderbachtal valley. When his son Peter and grandson Robert would visit him in Nierenhof, he would walk through the valley as a means of relaxation. Gustav Walter Heinemann was the Lord Mayor of Essen from 1946 until 1949 and served as Federal Minister of the Interior from 1949 until 1950. He went on to become Federal Minister of Justice, a position which he held from 1966 until 1969 when he was finally appointed Federal President. He remained President until 1974. The Discovery Loop “Gustav-Heinemann Route” takes you along paths that have been used for recreational purposes for over a hundred years.
