The orchard culture and the Viez have created a unique tourist route, the "Viezstraße". It leads from Merzig on the Saar in numerous loops across the Saargau to the Moselle city of Trier.

When the Romans moved north, they had to do without many of the things they had grown to love at home, such as wine. And so they discovered another intoxicating drink, cider. It became the substitute wine while the newly planted vines grew up. As a substitute for wine, the Roman cider was called "vice-vinum"... or so the story goes. Whether this story is actually true can no longer be conclusively clarified, but the name has remained: Viez! Viez is a drink in an infinite number of variations: pure apple Viez, blends with pear, quince or elder; and there is the sweet Viez, the unfermented apple juice. Traditionally, Viez is made dry. In the meantime, Viez is also available as Secco, sparkling wine or Schampus. Viez is produced with an alcohol content of 5 - 7 percent, so the dry, tart drink harmonises excellently with hearty dishes.
