The 51 m high tower was first mentioned in 1376 and has been rebuilt several times since then. Until 1848 the tower and the adjacent entrance to the city were connected to the Kaisertrutz by two high shield walls.

The tower was still inhabited until 1904. In the "Türmerstübchen", the stove of the last Türmer can still be found. Since 1946, visitors have regularly climbed the 165 steps to the top and learn about the city's memorable history on seven floors. Once at the top, you are rewarded with a fantastic panoramic view, in good weather even as far as the Sudeten Mountains.

After installing tie rods to ensure the stability of the tower, the Görlitz painter Arno Henschel was commissioned to create the coat of arms shields. These show in the upper row the coats of arms of the countries to which Görlitz has belonged in the course of its history and below the coats of arms of the cities in the historical six-city alliance: Bautzen, Löbau, Zittau, Kamenz and Luban.
