Eifelmuseum - EifelTotal

Genovevaburg castle is a symbol of the town of Mayen. It can be seen from far and wide, towering over the town centre. Inside, it is home to the Eifelmuseum with the exhibiton "EifelTotal" and the German Slate Quarry Museum.

"EifelTotal" is dedicated entirely to the Eifel, its landscape, its people and its history.
Every floor covers a different thematic area relating to the Eifel and is a journey through time.
According to the theme, the geology of the Eifel is to be found in the basement of the museum. The colour of fire, red, dominates the exhibition, which shows how the Eifel was created from water and developed from a desert to today’s volcanic landscape.

Why is the Eifel called “Eifel”? How big is the Eifel? These and many more informative and light-hearted questions are answered interactively on the ground floor.

Other thematic areas vividly demonstrate the effects of the climate and soil on the flora and fauna both past and present, how the Eifel locals cultivated food and made clothing from this landscape and how faith has always played an important role here.
There are exhibits to get involved in and try out all along the way.

You can also climb the 34 metre Goloturm (Golo Tower) from the museum, with its beautiful view over Mayen and the Eifel landscape.
