Monument

The seven-metre-high Queen Victoria Memorial in Hochheim am Main’s vineyards was built to commemorate the British monarch’s visit in 1845. Queen Victoria and her husband, Prince Albert, undertook an extensive journey along the Rhine in 1845. Nine years later, on 24 May 1854, the proud Hochheim vintner unveiled the simply designed monument in the middle of his 5 ha estate. To this day, it stands between the vines to mark this world-famous location. The monument was extensively renovated for Queen Victoria’s 200th birthday in 2020. Moreover, tradition has it that Her Majesty held Hochheim wine, which she called ‘Hock’, in great esteem – not least because of its healing properties. The saying ‘A hock a day keeps the doctor away’ is attributed to her. Tip: visit rheinische-geschichte.lvr.de to read an amusing article about Victoria’s Rhine tour as seen by the media.
