The Humboldt Monument in the old city park was erected in 1871, and in 1875 an ornamental fountain with a jet of water was built, the Humboldt Fountain. The fountain sculpture at that time, a zinc casting, corresponded to the style of the time and seemed rather overloaded to our today's opinion.
The fountain sculpture "Fishing Boys" was donated in 1929 by the Görlitz art glass merchant Ewald Schneider (remains of his once magnificent shop can still be found at Weberstraße 9).
Ewald Schneider was an art-loving citizen who donated sculptural ornaments to the city of Görlitz in the 1920s to beautify the public parks, including children's figures, a sundial and ornamental vases for the Ölberggarten and the Feldberggarten (now on the Polish side).
In the course of time, the Fishing Boys, a work in cast stone, had been damaged again and again, so that a comprehensive restoration was unavoidable. This was carried out in 2004 and was mainly financed with funds gratefully provided by the Lions Club and the Old Town Foundation. This can be seen as a continuation of civic commitment to the beautification of our city.
