Wernigerode castle gardens

The zoo extends around the foot of the castle for some distance to the east to the Agnesberg. The pleasure garden has existed since the 17th century. The orangery, the enclosing wall with the Lion Gate, and a pair of putti are all original baroque features. The protected chestnut wood is home to a number of trees producing edible chestnuts. Favourable climatic conditions have enabled the trees with their edible fruits to flourish since the first half of the 18th century.
