Nordeck Castle is located in the Allendorf district of Nordeck and still characterizes the image of the village. The beginnings of the castle, the Lords of Nordeck, are dated to the 12th century. A document about the construction phase has not been discovered yet, however, historians concluded, based on the size of the chapel, which was typical for a certain period, the beginning of construction. The dimensions of the chapel are based on the "Roman foot", this unit of measurement was used only until the 11th century.
On the three sides of the small castle courtyard there are buildings from the 14th to the 17th century. The historical ensemble is completed by an old well, the castle chapel and the castle garden. The castle chapel is located in the outer castle, the walls of which enclosed a part of the village lying on the slope. For better defense, Nordeck Castle was built directly on the slope with a neck ditch, shield wall and round keep (12th/13th century) on the attack side. Today, after more than 800 years, the castle complex is still well preserved and intensively used.
The castle often changed its owners over the centuries. In the castle garden, a memorial stone commemorates one of them: Götz-Eberhard Freiherr von Nordeck zu Rabenau - the last of his tribe. Today, the castle complex is owned by the Counts of Schwerin zu Friedelhausen and houses a country school.
Even though the castle complex is used privately today, you should not miss to climb the small mountain and be impressed by the romantic castle complex.
