The Feldherrnhalle was built in 1884 by Friedrich Gärtner. It was built in honor of the Bavarian military.
On behalf of King Ludwig I, Friedrich Gärtner built the Feldherrnhalle in 1884. It was built in the style of a Florentine loggia and is dedicated to the Bavarian army. On November 9, 1923 Hitler and his followers marched towards the Feldherrnhalle as part of the Hitler-Ludendorf Putsch. This march was bloodily ended by the police and several people, including 15 putschists, four police officers and one bystander, lost their lives. Hitler and Ludendorf escaped but were arrested shortly afterwards and the NSDAP banned throughout Germany. Hitler's attempt to reach power was pitifully failed, the media interest he was promised for was enormous. With the seizure of power by Hitler, the Feldherrnhalle became a cult location for the movement. Hitler carried out the "March to the Feldherrnhalle" every year as a reminder of the attempted coup, and a memorial plaque was placed on the eastern side of the Feldherrnhalle in honor of the soldiers killed. Today, a bronze plaque in front of the hall commemorates the country policemen killed in the attempted coup in 1923.
