Another castle of the Bismarck family is located in Burgstall.
For his political and financial support of the eldest son of Emperor Ludwig IV, "the Bavarian", Nikolaus von Bismarck (1307-1377) received Burgstall together with the outlying estate of Briest as a fief. The family thus became one of the eight castle-settled noble families of the Altmark.Stays by the margraves of Brandenburg brought a welcome change to the secluded Burgstall and gave rise to extensive hunts.Today, the "new castle", most recently the forestry office, and the old castle hill are reminders of the ancestral seat. The moat, the keep in the middle of the grounds and a trunk building remain from the castle. From Burgstall, a detour to nearby Birkholz is recommended.
